The Library of Congress provides this collection of digital images depicting American life.  Browse collections by topic or search all collections. Click on ‘about this image’ links to find any restrictions on use of the image.

NYPLD Digital Gallery - http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/index.cfm

The New York Public Library provides digital access to over 640,000 images. Collections include manuscripts, maps, vintage posters, rare prints, photographs, and much more. Browse the entire collection or search by keyword. 

FLICKR’s Creative Commons - http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons

Flickr users decide the level of copyright protection on their images. This website allows you to search image collections of contributors who allow you to use their images, just be sure to cite the image in MLA format. The NRCS Photo Gallery contains natural resource and conservation related photos from across the USA. Photos in the gallery are available free of charge in two common image formats and should be credited to the photographer.

Collection of over 2,00 films from advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur collections.  Public domain films in the Prelinger Archive are free to download and reuse.

This is a huge directory of image providing websites.  Click on the linked titles to access collections. Some collections are protected by copyright.

Fotosearch - http://www.fotosearch.com/

This collection of stock footage, stock photography grows each week. Search by keyword. De-select the ‘rights managed’ option and select the ‘royalty free’ option next to the search bar. Changing those search options allows you to search free, useable images.
